Now that we have power and water, we have removed everything under the stairwell and have bleached/power washed the basement.

Yay, no more spider webs!
|
All additional work on the basement is now on stand by for the next couple of months until we get a couple of things installed. In early August, we will be getting our basement trap and the manhole replaced. The trap will be cleaned out and reconfigured, which will give us better access to our sewer lines. The manhole will also be replaced with a sump pump and floor drain. And at some point before getting our certificate of occupancy we need to purchase and install a water heater and furnace. After those things we will power wash the basement again and epoxy it.

Pretty big difference. |

No more freezer and toilet! |
As you walked down to the basement there was a little closet/room near the steps. The room had a bunch of shelves and was probably used for food storage since Kev found a tub of flour in there. We decided to remove the warped, water damaged door and the small lathe and plaster wall.

Vermiculite |
While demoing the area, Kevin took down MDF boards that were acting as the ceiling of the room. When he took the boards down, we found that the ceiling was insulated with cardboard boxes filled with vermiculite. The boxes were wedged in place with old Duluth Herald newspaper dated from July 26, 1965 - 48 years from today! Some of the articles included: Minimum Wage Extension of $1.25, bread tax and fire flies.

The demo job made the basement feel more open!
Geez, you guys are good. Very soon your house will be nicer than our Ironwood house :) It's pretty close right now!
ReplyDeleteHaha, thanks! We're trying to get her done. Right now the basement is by far the cleanest/nicest part of the house.
DeleteWow....I think I saw that basement in the movie, "The Conjuring".
ReplyDeleteOn a lighter note.....the newspaper story was neato! You guys should start a time capsule and include the paper and a copy of this blog with pics for future owners of the house to find. :)
